When this course has been completed, the student should be able to:
- Understand the approach used by Expert Author to create an effective learning experience using a realistic simulation of the software to be taught.
- Understand some of the advantages to be gained by using the Expert Author approach to content creation.
- Understand how to create a written script/storyboard in Microsoft Word, and then import the script into Expert Author.
- Know how to capture an applications complete menu system, toolbars, bitmaps, and other interactive components from within Expert Author.
- Know how to combine menus, toolbars, bitmaps, and other interactive components into "views" that represent the software to be taught.
- Understand how to work with the Timeline to create the interactive learning experience.
- Understand the purpose of narrative, to do, error, and hint text.
- Know how to edit all of the text items associated with a lesson step.
- Be introduced to Expert Author's Import feature.
- Know how to create a script in Microsoft Word that can be imported into Expert Author.
- Know how to capture an application's menu system - including all of the pull-down and flyout menus.
- Know how to use a captured menu system in the current lesson, and any other lesson.
- Understand the differences between the three types of menu interactions, and be able to create a Full Menu interaction.
- Know how to manipulate the properties of a menu while working in the Timeline.
- Know how to capture an application's toolbars.
- Know how to use a captured toolbars in the current lesson, and any other lesson.
- Know how to manipulate the properties of a toolbar while working in the Timeline.
- Understand the approach used by Expert Author to mimic a software application by using "views" that consist of "live" menus, toolbars, documents, and other interactive objects.
- Understand the advantages gained by using Expert Author's component and object-based approach to software simulation.
- Know how to use the New View wizard to create a view by specifying which components will be contained in the view.
- Know how to replace one or more components, and change the appearance and functionality of a component when working in the Timeline by changing the properties of one or more objects.
- Understand the benefit of creating a script/storyboard, and then using Expert Author to create a functioning lesson.
- Understand that Expert Author has two primary modes - one for creating assets and another for working with the Timeline.
- Understand that Author mode is for working with the Timeline and the Display Area.
- Understand the purpose of Asset mode, and know the three categories of assets used by Expert Author.
- Understand the structure of the Timeline and the role it plays in the authoring process.
- Understand that the Timeline contains several types of steps, and know the differences between the step types.
- Have a detailed understanding of the Standard Simulation step type, and be able to identify and work with the six Timeline items associated with it.
- Understand the purpose of Display items in the Timeline.
- Know how to view the Display at any point in the lesson.
- Know how to use the Display Area to the right of the Timeline.
- Know how to use the two Display modes.
- Know how to use the Define Display wizard.
- Understand how to create a new Display by using existing Views.
- Understand how Display components allow students to interact with the software simulation.
- Understand the steps involved in creating a user interaction.
- Understand that at least one Interaction item appears in every lesson step.
- Understand that the types of resources on the Display at a given point in the Timeline determine which interactions are possible.
- Know how to use the Interaction wizard to create interactions.
- Know how to work with multiple interactions in a single step.
